## Best for

Cost-sensitive ultra-high-vacuum applications requiring intermittent rotation of balanced loads up to 1 kg.

The RSB range offers four gearing configurations with angular resolutions from 0.036° to 0.004° per full step.

Choose an RSB stage when the payload is light and balanced, and the higher load capacity of a VSM rotation stage is unnecessary. 1kg centred load capacity.

RSB stages have a continuous rotation range, are suitable for vacuum environments down to 1 × 10⁻¹⁰ mbar and are bakeable to 200 °C.

## Not suitable when

Do not select a standard RSB stage for loads above 1 kg, substantial unbalanced loads or demanding cantilever arrangements without review by AML.

The range is intended for intermittent rotation. A continuous rotation range does not imply suitability for continuous-duty operation.

For heavier loads or greater structural rigidity, compare the VSM17-R-72K, VSM17-R-3K6 and VSM24-R.

For backlash-critical or bidirectional positioning applications, ask AML to confirm the applicable backlash and repeatability under the proposed loading conditions.

## Selection guidance

Select the RSB ratio according to the required angular increment:

- RSB10K: 10,000 full steps per revolution; 0.036° per step.
- RSB20K: 20,000 full steps per revolution; 0.018° per step.
- RSB30K: 30,000 full steps per revolution; 0.012° per step.
- RSB90K: 90,000 full steps per revolution; 0.004° per step.

Choose a finer-step version only where the application benefits from the smaller commanded increment. Assess the required rotation time as well as resolution.

Do not equate full-step resolution with angular accuracy, repeatability or backlash. Confirm those requirements separately.

## Compatibility and prerequisites

RSB stages use an AML D35.1 UHV stepper motor. Provide a compatible bipolar stepper motor drive, such as the AML SMD3, with motor temperature monitoring and suitable vacuum wiring and feedthroughs.

AML identifies RSB10K, RSB20K and RSB30K as stackable with AML translation stages. Check the specific mounting interfaces for the intended assembly.

Do not assume that RSB90K has the same mounting arrangement as the other RSB versions.

Keep the payload balanced about the rotation axis and confirm clearance for the payload, fixtures and any attached cables.

## Ordering guidance

Standard order codes: RSB10K, RSB20K, RSB30K and RSB90K.

Specify the required angular resolution and confirm that the selected ratio meets the required rotation time.

Standard stages use NyeTorr 6300 UHV grease. Dry lubrication with molybdenum disulfide is available as an alternative, but reduces the expected life of the worm wheel. Discuss lubrication restrictions and expected service life with AML before selecting this option.

Provide quantity, payload including fixtures, load balance, mounting orientation, required rotation range, speed, duty cycle, positioning requirements and bakeout temperature.

Confirm mounting compatibility, the motor drive, feedthroughs and cabling before ordering.

AML ultra high vacuum compatible rotation stages are intended for intermittent rotation of balanced loads or as a precision gearbox. They are manufactured with UHV compatible material and construction methods and utilize AML D35.1 UHV stepper motors.
