The VSM17-R-3K6 provides continuous 360° rotation and a published load capacity of 100 kg. Its maximum loaded speed is published as up to 100 rpm, with maximum torque up to 1 Nm. Choose the VSM17-R-3K6 when the slower, finer-step VSM17-R-72K is not the best match for the required movement. Suitable for vacuum environments down to 1 × 10⁻¹⁰ mbar. ## Not suitable when Do not select the standard VSM17-R-3K6 when commanded angular steps finer than 0.1° or torque above its published 1 Nm maximum are required. Compare the VSM17-R-72K or VSM24-R instead. AML describes this as a zero-backlash stage, with backlash specified as less than the step resolution. This does not mean zero total positioning error. Do not assume that the maximum published speed is achievable with every payload, load distribution or acceleration. For loads beyond its published 100 kg capacity, or demanding cantilever arrangements, discuss the VSM24-R with AML. ## Selection guidance Choose the VSM17-R-3K6 when faster rotation and low reversal play are more important than fine angular step size. Choose the VSM17-R-72K when finer angular increments and higher torque are required, provided its lower rotational speed is acceptable. Assess the complete payload, its distance from the rotation axis, required acceleration and reversal frequency rather than selecting from payload mass alone. Keep resolution, accuracy and repeatability as separate requirements. Microstepping may improve smoothness, but should not be used to claim a guaranteed improvement in mechanical positioning resolution. ## Compatibility and prerequisites Use a compatible bipolar stepper motor drive, such as the AML SMD4, with motor temperature monitoring and suitable vacuum wiring and feedthroughs. The VSM17-R-3K6 has a removable mounting plate to assist installation. Secure the mechanism to a flat supporting surface without distorting its base. Provide compatible control inputs and wiring for any selected limit switch or encoder. The standard stage is published as bakeable to 200 °C.
