The VSM17-R-72K provides 0.005° resolution per step, continuous 360° rotation and a published load capacity of 100 kg. Its worm-and-wheel transmission prevents forces applied to the mounting table from backdriving the stage. Choose the VSM17-R-72K for fine rotational positioning, either as a standalone axis or within a multi-axis positioning mechanism. Suitable for vacuum environments down to 1 × 10⁻¹⁰ mbar. ## Not suitable when Do not select the VSM17-R-72K solely from its 0.005° step resolution when the application requires equally small positioning errors after reversing direction. Standard backlash is published as less than 0.2°. The published maximum loaded speed is up to 4 rpm and maximum torque is up to 8 Nm. Confirm that the required load, speed, acceleration and torque can be achieved together. For faster rotation where coarser angular steps are acceptable, consider the VSM17-R-3K6. For higher supported loads or demanding cantilever arrangements, consider the VSM24-R. ## Selection guidance Choose the VSM17-R-72K when fine commanded angular increments and a non-backdrivable transmission suit the application. Compare it with the VSM17-R-3K6 when rotational speed and reversal behaviour are more important than the smallest commanded step. Specify required angular accuracy, unidirectional repeatability and bidirectional repeatability separately from step resolution. Choose option LS when a repeatable once-per-revolution datum is required. Choose ER for incremental position feedback or EA for absolute position feedback. Do not treat encoder resolution as a guarantee of the complete stage's positioning accuracy. ## Compatibility and prerequisites Use a suitable bipolar stepper motor drive, such as the AML SMD4, with motor temperature monitoring and over-temperature protection. Unipolar drives are unsuitable. Provide appropriate vacuum-compatible wiring, electrical feedthroughs and connections for any selected encoder or limit switch. Mount the stage on a flat, rigid surface without distorting its baseplate. Route and secure cables clear of moving parts. The standard stage is published as bakeable to 200 °C. Confirm the permitted bakeout temperature for the complete ordered configuration, particularly when an encoder is fitted. ## Ordering guidance Standard order code: VSM17-R-72K — 0.005° resolution, continuous rotation.
